The United States needs to do better at teaching science and math, and the academy needs to play a key role in that quest, according to the Commission on 21st Century Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in a draft report to Congress.
In addition to better teaching, the report calls for new training standards for math and science teachers, as well as expanded federal programs to encourage students of both sexes to pursue careers in those fields. While these are worthy goals, one of the panel's chairs expects the draft to be beefed up before the National Science Board, part of the National Science Foundation, signs off on it this spring.
