The role of the office of student affairs is to advocate for students. Because of that singular focus, student affairs staff generally see the individual trees instead of the forest.
But once they reach the senior level, student affairs officers must not only see the trees, they have to recognize and understand the entire campus landscape. Their role has morphed from student advocacy to school advocacy.
These senior administrators must develop effective working relationships with their cabinet-level colleagues as well as with the school's president and trustees. They must seek to collaborate rather than advocate for their own issues.
