The U.S. Congress has passed a multi-billion dollar bill that calls for more research money and better training for teachers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Several provisions of The America Competes Act would attract more minorities and women to STEM majors. While 30% of incoming college freshman plan to study science, math or engineering, only 15% of bachelor's degrees are awarded in those areas, and even fewer to women and minorities.
Summer and after-school programs would be funded to attract females and minorities to STEM careers. The program would also bring teachers from low-income schools to colleges for seminars to improve their teaching of STEM subjects.
