The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics is examining what should happen to athletic aid if female athletes become pregnant.
Recently the topic has gained interest after several female athletes admitted to having abortions so that they could retain their scholarships. Currently each school makes its own decision on scholarship money for pregnant athletes, but recent discussions have some seeking a broader agreement.
While some believe that scholarships should continue when athletes become pregnant--as with other medical conditions--others think scholarships should go only to those who can perform on the field. "If you become pregnant and aren't able to play, then you shouldn't have your scholarship maintained," said University of Indianapolis AD Sue Willey. Most of her female athletes think becoming pregnant is a choice and students should not receive financial aid until they can play again, Willey said.
