The first essays in this issue address the role of the United States in what is becoming called the Pacific Rim Era. The industrial rise of India and China follows the success of the "four Asian tigers" (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) in producing large quantities of commercial goods for export around the world on the eariler Japanese model.
