Oct. 1--LAKELAND -- Polk County's Hispanic population is on the rise.
And while the Latino population is one of the fastest growing groups in the county, it has had a minor voice in the business community.
That's changing.
Last month marked the beginning of the new Polk County Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, headed by Ana Rivera.
The new organization, which focuses on promoting Hispanic businesses, is working to create a marketing plan between the U.S. island territory and Polk. Rivera, 49, an admissions counselor at Keiser University, also plans to offer entrepreneurship programs for children 12 to 19 years old.
And this past week, Rivera was sworn in as the organization's president and CEO and approved by the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
