Oct. 1--Interim school superintendent James Simms finds himself sitting at the helm of Clarke County Schools as the district embarks on its largest expansion in almost two decades.
A total of three new schools may be built in the next five years -- two elementaries and one experimental high school.
But it will be costly. Besides construction costs in the millions of dollars, Simms estimates each school will cost about a $1 million a year to staff and operate.
While Simms is optimistic, he warns the district will have to tread carefully during this period of expansion to remain on solid financial ground.
"We're going to have to vigilantly watch the budget the next few years," he said.
And, if the current trend continues, Clarke County taxpayers can expect little help from the state.
