Where does David Cronenberg, born in Canada, belong? From the start, his movies have offered a guided tour of the geography of the body, pointing out local highlights such as the uterus, the stomach, and the armpit. Wider locations do less to arouse his interest. The focus of "Dead Ringers" (1988) was squarely, and squirmingly, on the operating theatre in which his heroes toiled, not on the Toronto where they lived, and although the small-town setting of his previous film, "A History of Violence" (2005), was lovingly detailed, Cronenberg had no hesitation in breaking camp, halfway through, and shifting the story elsewhere. ...
