NEW YORK, Sept 30 Asia Pulse - Malaysia has called for the release of pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi and other political detainees in Myanmar, also known as Burma.
This call was made by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he addressed the 62nd United Nations General Assembly here Friday.
Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, had won a national election in 1990 but the military junta had prevented her from assuming office as prime minister and has placed her under house arrest since then.
Abdullah said that it would be remiss for Malaysia, as a member of Asean, to ignore the situation in Myanmar.
"Asean has done everything possible to encourage Myanmar towards reconciliation with democracy," he said.
