MELBOURNE, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Australian sharemarket opened slightly higher today, despite a fall on United States markets on Friday.
The major miners were higher and the big banks were mixed.
By 1010 AEST, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index had risen 14.6 points to 6582.4, and the All Ordinaries had gained 15.7 points to 6596.6.
On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the December share price index contract was up 35 points at 6641, on a volume of 3,255 contracts.
Biotechnology firm CSL was up 66 cents at A$107.96 (US$95.26) as it received United States regulatory approval for its influenza virus vaccine, its first move into the US vaccine market.
Online accommodation search web site Wotif.com was in a trading halt after making a A$49.8 million off-market takeover bid for Travel.com.au Ltd (TVL). Wotif last traded at A$5.25.
Wotif.com is offering TVL shareholders either 0.50 in cash per TVL share, or between 0.0893 and 0.1042 Wotif.com shares per TVL share. TVL was also in a trading halt, having last changed hands at 55 cents.
