Sep. 28--A unifying dynamic is spreading through the Rolling Meadows football team.
Running back Mikel Johnson explains it best.
"Last year it was all about stats and more stats," Johnson said of No. 9 Rolling Meadows (5-0), which returned 18 starters. "This year we're trying to play as a team and not trying to make a play to be in the newspaper. And we're not concerned about stats at all."
That begins with Johnson, the powerfully built 5-foot-11-inch, 216-pounder who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards last season with 15 touchdowns.
Going into Friday night's game of the year in the Mid-Suburban East at Prospect, Johnson has 339 yards and six TDs.
Helping Johnson turn Rolling Meadows into "Team Unity" are his good friends, quarterback Ben Sabal and receiver Ty Kirk. Johnson and Kirk have been buddies since their days at Forest View Elementary School in Mt. Prospect, while Sabal and Kirk initiated their friendship in middle school.
