Officials of the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter and the group's leaders from throughout San Mateo County, California, gathered at a Heroes Breakfast on June 14 to recognize area residents for heroism. Among those honored were:
* Mike Nunez of Redwood City, who received the Red Cross' Act of Courage Award for Adults for helping to rescue (along with three Redwood City police officers) a badly burned woman from her burning home. "I really don't feel like I'm a hero. I just did what I had to do," Nunez told the San Mateo County Times.
* Maggie Kerwin of Burlingame, who received the Life Saving Award for Youths. At age 10, Maggie was the youngest hero honored that day. When Maggie's mother, Amy, fell 15 feet into the family's drained swimming pool on April 1, ...
