Few biographical facts are known about the Flemish painter Joachim Patinir. He was born between 1480 and 1485, had joined the Antwerp Guild by 1515, and died in that city in 1524. In 1521 he met Albrecht Durer, who described him as a "good painter of landscapes," and it is for that category of paintings that he is best known today. Interestingly, landscapes were not the actual subjects of his work, but, rather, he is considered the first artist to allow the landscape to dominate a narrative scene. For example, craggy mountains and lush valleys dwarf the tiny figures in his Flight into Egypt or Charon Crossing the River Styx (illustrated at top).
