Going Up, Going Down is a thoroughly researched, well-written, attractively presented book that covers the history of New Zealand department stores, primarily between the 1920s and 1960s. Its strength lies in its detailed research and the ability of Laurenson to bring the social and cultural history of the old stores back to life. Numerous well-reproduced photographs assist her in this, as do the quotes from shoppers and employees that run throughout the text.
