Computer manufacturer Acer America has announced a program to replace 27,000 rechargeable notebook computer lithium-ion batteries containing Sony-made cells. The batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard.
The recalls are the latest in a series involving Sony cells that since late last year have affected more than 3.4 million battery packs. Previous brands involved included Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, and Fujitsu. There have been 16 reports of batteries overheating, all associated with earlier recalls by other notebook computer manufacturers of batteries containing those Sony cells. Those reports involved only minor property damage and minor burns. None of the reports involved batteries in Acer notebook computers.
The Acer notebook-computer models involved in the recall are the TravelMate Series beginning with 242x, 320x, 321x, 330x, 422x, 467x, 561x, and C20x, and the Aspire Series beginning with 556x, 560x, 930x, 941x, and 980x.
