Our early impressions of the new Saturn Outlook crossover indicate that it--and its twin, GMC's Acadia, and cousin, Buick's Enclave, due this summer--might be the most competitive GM product in years.
Car-based crossovers combine a minivan's three-row seating and versatility with an SUV's all-wheel drive and looks, which is important to people whose self-image doesn't include a minivan. The Outlook is about a foot longer than its most direct competitor, the Honda Pilot. The engine is GM's multivalve, 3.6-liter, 275-hp V6. A front-wheel-drive Outlook starts at $27,990. The virtually identical Acadia costs $2,000 more, for no apparent reason. Prices of Outlook models with leather and sunroof climb to the mid-$30,000s. We bought our all-wheel-drive XR for $36,799.
