When methadone was found in Anna Nicole Smith's refrigerator after she died suddenly on Feb. 8, many assumed that she had succumbed to an overdose. She did--to chloral hydrate. In fact, she was taking methadone for pain and had therapeutic levels in her system, according to Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper. She also had therapeutic levels of benzodiazepine in her system. The major factor in her death was a sedative called chloral hydrate, according to Perper, who released his report March …
