Although attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as parental alcoholism, are "well-known risk factors" for offspring substance use, Brooke Molina and her colleagues have published one of the first studies to examine their combined effects. Writing in the April issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, this study in adolescents found that the association between parental alcoholism and problem drinking in teenagers was "partly explained by higher rates of stress in these families."
