Marc Shinderman, M.D., was sentenced to six months' incarceration last week in Portland, Maine, for using a colleague's name to write prescriptions for benzodiazepines. This was discovered after a raid on the for-profit CAP clinic by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to investigate high rates of methadone overdoses. The DEA did not find any evidence of misuse of methadone, but instead, focused their investigation on the questionable prescriptions.

Despite his sentencing last week Shinderman is still a highly respected authority on methadone maintenance treatment. At his sentencing hearing March 26, more than 200 people from the field wrote letters or appeared saying no good would come of putting Shinderman behind bars.
