MELBOURNE, Sept 28 Asia Pulse - ANZ Banking Group Ltd's (ASX:ANZ) incoming boss Michael Smith wants his bank to become a regional power.

Mr Smith was formerly the head of the Asian banking division at HSBC, now a global giant that was, itself, founded in Hong Kong.

In his first major press briefing today, Mr Smith firmly nailed his colours to the Asia-oriented mast established by his predecessor John McFarlane.

Mr Smith said he had always wondered why Australian banks "haven't been doing more in Asia"....
