Sep. 27--KERNERSVILLE

The opening of the Oakhurst Drive extension makes it easier for motorists to navigate across the center of town, but the closing of Tanyard Lane nearby obscures a portion of the town's history.

Workers began digging up asphalt on Tanyard Lane last week and spreading dirt to level the landscape where the street joins Main Street beside Main Street United Methodist Church.

Barriers blocked traffic from using the historic lane as a through street, although the section from Cherry Street toward the back of the church is open to give access to the church parking lots.
