Sep. 27--If North Carolinians need evidence of the legal corruption inherent in General Assembly operations, they need look no further than a state check written last week for Rep. Thomas Wright of Wilmington.
Wright, a Democrat, is one of a dozen or so legislators of both parties who were reimbursed for meals, housing and travel expenses that they did not incur. They were supposed to attend the two-day special legislative session held earlier this month to consider Gov. Mike Easley's veto of a $40 million subsidy to the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The legislature upheld the veto but passed a new bill that provided $60 million in subsidies to a number of businesses. …
