Two houses built in opposite corners of the United States between 1907 and 1909--the David Berry Gamble House in Pasadena, California (Fig. 2), and the Everett D. Chadwick house in Winchester, Massachusetts (Fig. 3)--look very different from each other. Yet both should be recognized as exemplifying the arts and crafts movement as it developed in this country in the early years of the twentieth century.
