The legacy of Herman Marcus and Marcus and Company: Part II, the Marcus and Company years, 1892-1941.
Following the retirement of George B. Jaques (c. 1843-1910) from Jaques and Marcus in 1892, Herman Marcus (1828-1899) and his sons William Elder (Fig. 1) and George Elder renamed the firm Marcus and Company, remaining at the same New York City location, 857 Broadway at the corner of Seventeenth Street. (1) William served as president and George became secretary and treasurer. (2) For the first few years, they continued making jewelry in much the same manner as Jaques and Marcus. The bee brooch in Figure 3 with two baroque pearls forming the body, for example, dating to about 1895, is similar to an insect brooch marked by Jaques and Marcus in the Metropolitan Museum of Art ...
