Analysis of a wide array of studies and reports confirms an increased risk of heart failure in type 2 diabetes patients who take the thiazolidinedione drugs rosiglitazone and pioglitazone, even in patients who are young, take low doses, and lack heart failure history.
The findings should prompt a reevaluation of recommendations for the use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs) "even at low doses in NYHA [New York Heart Association] Stage I and II heart failure patients and in those with risk factors for heart failure," said Dr. Sonal Singh of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C., and his colleagues (Diabetes Care 2007;30:2148-53).
