CHICAGO _ For years, parents have worried that a mercury-based preservative in vaccines may have caused subtle developmental or neurological problems in their children.
Now, a paper in this week's New England Journal of Medicine says those concerns are unfounded.
The study concludes there is no connection between infants' exposure to the preservative, thimerosal, and their IQ or their language, memory and fine motor skills later in childhood.
"These are very reassuring findings," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunizations.
