Sep. 14--Colusa's Tim McLaughlin is in the driver's seat to capture his first SORA Sprint 100 championship.
McLaughlin leads defending champion and three-time winner Tony Gaoiran of Livermore by two points, 1,069-1,067, heading into the season's finale Saturday at Orland Speedway. McLaughlin had a one-point lead over Gaoiran going into last Saturday's race at Marysville Raceway Park, but McLaughlin won both his heat and the main event, while Gaoiran finished second in both.
"Basically the main event was a wash," McLaughlin said, noting in the Sprint 100 division, cars earn points not only based on where they finish but also how many cars they passed.
It was the fourth time the Sprint 100s raced at Marysville and McLaughlin said "the track was the best it's ever been."
McLaughlin's night didn't start out in the best of ways. When he came off the track after mud-ins, McLaughlin's car had a flat left-front tire. Thanks to Gaoiran's crew, he was able to get a new tire on and the car back out for hot laps.
"That's the thing I like about this division," McLaughlin. "The camaraderie in this group is outstanding. When we're in the pits, everyone is so friendly. We're always willing to help each other out."
