Sep. 14--For some Sutter County residents, wells dotting the landscape aren't a real gas.
"It's only been a few wells in recent history," says resident Mike Smith. "And now it's lots and lots of wells."
Oil and gas wells in the county are in the Meridian basin, the Robbins basin and around the Sutter Buttes.
Since 2000, the number of permits issued annually has varied between three and 75.
There are no real parameters for gas and oil well permits since it's considered a ministerial act, Planning Division Chief Lisa Wilson told the Board of Supervisors this week. A use permit is needed only if there's a dispute with a landowner.
But, Wilson said, "The board has ultimate authority over what policies are in place."
