Abdullah Gul, the Turkish FM, fails to win an outright majority in the first round of voting in the country's presidential elections. As candidate for the governing Justice and Development party (AKP), Gul scored 341 votes in the 550-seat parliament, 26 seats short of the two-thirds majority needed for his election. In Aug 20 first round of voting, Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, the candidate of the opposition National Movement party (MHP), scored 70 votes, with a third candidate, Tayfun Ilci of the Democratic Left party (DSP), scoring 13. Deputies from the main opposition Republican Peoples' party boycotted the vote. The election will move to a second round of voting on August 24, in which only Gul and Cakmakoglu will stand. Although the AKP has failed to command the necessary two-thirds majority in parliament, a third round of voting scheduled for August 28 requires the winning candidate to receive only a simple majority of 276 votes.
