Sep. 12--On Monday, the day Gen. David Petraeus began his testimony to Congress about U.S. progress in Iraq, I had a drink with my high school boyfriend.
The connection may not seem obvious. That's part of the point.
This long war is the white noise of our lives now, a hum of apprehension that's always in the background. It's like a TV in a bar. You may not be paying full attention, but you can't quite forget it's there.
At first, the high school boyfriend and I talked about the expected things. His two marriages and three kids; the business he owns in a Dallas suburb; the convention at McCormick Place that brought him to Chicago.
We traded updates on our siblings and old friends, exchanged tales of work and travel. On an average day, he said, he's happiest when he's gardening.
Then somehow we landed on the war.
