UN's ECLAC boosts Caribbean Basin short-sea.

The U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is promoting short-distance maritime transport to improve connectivity within the region, official Ricardo Sanchez told the South American news service BNamericas.

Ricardo Sanchez, economic affairs officer for ECLAC's natural resources and infrastructure division, pointed to Europe as a model and suggested that short-sea shipping could be implemented first in Central America.

He added that once the threat of storms and other natural disasters are set aside by being "bi-oceanic" Central America is ideal for the development of the short-distance maritime transport model.
