Open access is branded 'junk science' by US lobby
Mark Chillingworth
A new organisation founded by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) claims that Open Access (OA) publishing is "junk science" and will destroy the foundations of peer review. OA supporters in the UK are dismayed at the negativity of the campaign and its misleading message.
The Partnership for Research Integrity in Science and Medicine (PRISM) is a forum for publishers that are against open access publishing. PRISM has "developmental support" from the AAP and plans to lobby the US Congress on what it calls the "risks of proposed government interference with the scholarly communication process".
Most commentators believe its arrival is timed to counter a possible change in National Institute of Health (NIH) policy to make it mandatory for NIH funded research to be deposited with open access database PubMed Central. Elias A Zerhouni, NIH director, said the current voluntary policy is not working.
With US senators due to vote on the annual NIH appropriation bill, which sets out the funding and wording of the bill, PRISM is seeking to lobby against the bill's mandatory open access element.
