Eduserv reveals low Shibboleth take-up
Survey reveals that UK universities are slow to join Federation, writes Tracey Caldwell
Most educational institutes lack the time, resources and budget to join a new access management federation, according to OpenAthens supplier Eduserv. As the countdown begins to the withdrawal of JISC funding for Athens authentication, providing secure access to journals, JISC is encouraging institutions to join the UK Access Management Federation.
Eduserv launched OpenAthens in March to offer institutions managed access to the UK Access Management Federation. According to research Eduserv carried out in March and April, only 30% of HE and FE institutions assessing the transition to a federated approach to access and identity management, based on Shibboleth technology, plan to join the UK Access Management Federation by July 2008.
Eduserv reports: "The costs and benefits of federated access management remain unclear, making it difficult for institutions to plan their access management strategies. 70% of institutions have not set a budget for Federated Access Management, while 97% of institutions want to retain access to Athens resources."
