Data could kill knowledge A- as long as the lights stay on

David Tebbutt

Monday: the power supply to the road goes off for 12 hours starting at 3am. At 6am my kitchen fitters start to arrive. Fortunately, they have battery-operated drills and screwdrivers, but it cramps their style.

Same with the computers A- had I been there. Fortunately, I was at the seaside, hiding from the disruption at home. Had there been any shops, I wonder how they would have coped without cash registers and credit card readers.

On Thursday, Skype vanished.

All this was happening as a friend was close to completing his first implementation of a new electronic performance support system. He has spent the best part of a year, in his own time, building a knowledge base which gives salespeople and information workers access to his domain knowledge. It is "him in a box" A- an expert at their elbow at all times.
