Rupert Murdoch has sent shockwaves through the news and information sector, after signalling his intention to make wsj.com, the website of his new acquisition the Wall Street Journal, free of charge. wsj.com is currently one of the most successful online subscription businesses, bringing in an estimated [pounds sterling]32.1m every year for its owner Dow Jones, and attracting 900,000 subscribers.
But Murdoch last month indicated his belief that offering free access to the site would increase readership and therefore bring in higher revenue from online advertising.
