SYDNEY, Sept 3 Asia Pulse - Manufacturing activity in Australia eased in August as growth in consumer demand and new orders waned, new figures show.
The Australian Industry Group-PricewaterhouseCoopers Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) for August fell 5.0 points in the month to 52.4.
The index, however, remains above 50 points - the level that separates expansion from contraction.
Despite the fall in manufacturing activity in August, it was the 15th consecutive month of growth.
The softening in activity was reflected across all key indicators - production, new orders, finished stocks, deliveries and exports - although employment remained largely unchanged.
Seasonally adjusted, the production sub-index fell 2.9 points to 54.6, while the new orders sub-index fell 10.4 points to 51.1.
In July, the new orders sub-index had reached its highest level in five years.
