GENEVA, Sept. 3 Asia Pulse - A working group of American and North Korean officials met here on Saturday to discuss ways to normalize diplomatic ties between their two countries, foes since the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War.
The two-day session is part of a reward promised to the communist North in a six-nation accord signed in February, but the main topic of the meeting was widely expected to boil down to how and when the North would implement its denuclearization pledges, according to diplomatic sources here.
Ahead of his coming talks with North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, Washington's chief nuclear envoy and also the head delegate to the U.S.-North Korea talks, on Wednesday said his country would not normalize ties with the communist nation unless it first gives up its nuclear ambition.
The North Korean diplomat also heads his country's delegation to six-nation talks on ending the nuclear dispute that erupted in late 2002.
The working group is one of five that stem from the February deal, in which Pyongyang promised to disable its key nuclear facilities and declare all its nuclear programs.
