At about 7:45 a.m. on June 22, Payton Newell, a 12-year-old girl from Roswell, Georgia, was walking her family's pit bull when it broke away from her and attacked a 69-year-old woman named Lan Khanh Trinh. The dog knocked Trinh down and repeatedly bit her face and arm.
Trinh's screams for help got a quick and fairly large-scale response. First on the scene was neighbor Robert Bailey, who ran to the woman's aid while dressed only in boxer shorts and a robe. "Bailey yanked the 60-pound male, named Achilles, off of Trinh, then positioned himself between the dog and the victim. Then he came to his senses," reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As soon as the dog's attention focused on him, Bailey realized he had few means to defend himself.
Then, other neighbors arrived with sticks and shovels for defense. "Neighbors tried to stop the attack by beating the dog with sticks and shovels, but 'they didn't faze him,' said Charles Tedford, president of the homeowners association ... where the attack occurred." One of the defenders, Spencer Alexander, was bitten in the arm during their efforts. When Marc Del Santro arrived on the scene carrying his pistol, the dog turned to attack him, and he shot it, killing it instantly--a bad dog down ...
