Chris Chappel entered a Wachovia Bank in Bessemer, Alabama, at about 9 a.m. on May 14--into the midst of a lethal armed robbery. The robber, William Merriweather, Jr., walked into the bank, demanded money, and almost immediately began firing at the tellers, shooting four of them, killing two.
Chappel ran out of the bank unharmed, grabbed his gun, and prepared to ambush Merriweather as he exited the bank. But it didn't work out quite like he planned. Chappel told CBS Channel 42 News: "When [Merriweather] tried to come out of the bank, I was standing there drawed down on him and he didn't fully come out the doors, so he run back in when he seen me."
