On October 8, 2006 at about 2:30 a.m., Norman Borden and a friend were walking Borden's four pit bulls near West Palm Beach, Florida, when 20-year-old Juan Mendez and 19-year-old Christopher Araujo began a verbal altercation with Borden. The two aggressors then briefly left to get a third man, 21-year-old Saul Trejo. When the trio returned, they shouted threats at Borden, and they drove straight at him in a Jeep. Fearing that he was about to be run over and brutally attacked, Borden pulled his pistol and opened fire. He shot five times into the front windshield of the Jeep, causing the driver to veer out of control and crash. Borden saw movement in the Jeep and fired nine more times. Araujo and Trejo were killed. Mendez was wounded.
