YESTERDAY I ASCENDED the liquidambar tree in our new garden until I attained its summit where the branches bearing my weight were no thicker than the wrist of a five-year-old child.
In three days I will be fifty-eight, and there is a case for my forsaking the lifelong pleasure that goes with getting high. But the case carries little weight when I am in the actual crown of the tree, scanning westward where the frail blue profile of the Brindabellas is visible beyond the suburban roofs and the unsightly tofu cubes of Civic's new carparks and cinemas.
