Aug. 28--Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school officials recorded higher-than-expected enrollment numbers yesterday on the first day of school, but they don't believe what could be a startling increase.
The school system had 52,636 students enrolled yesterday, which would be a 5 percent increase over the 50,206 students that the system had last year. The figure was based on the number of students who were already enrolled in school, and the ones who showed up to be enrolled.
In the next week, principals will sort through the database to eliminate students who were enrolled at one school but transferred to another, or simply didn't show up. That will cause the number of students to decrease,…
