A group of eighth-graders in a life-skills class at George Washington Middle School in Wayne, New Jersey, volunteered to devote recess time to work with autistic students during the last school term.
The dozen or so volunteers, who are called STARS (Students Teaching and Reaching for Success), were asked to devote two periods per week, but students Kristen McGuinness and Cameron O'Rourke, among others, requested that this service be extended to five days a week.
According to The Record (Bergen County, New Jersey), Cameron explained that some of his classmates did not understand why he volunteered for the program. When asked why he gives up recess, his standard reply is, "They are our friends, too."
