Nicole Gorski, who is 16, was home with her younger brothers, six-year-old Ryan and four-year-old Andrew, in Chesterfield Township, Michigan, on March 28. Nicole's mother had left her in charge while she was at work.
It was a chilly day, so Nicole put a kettle of water on to boil and then turned up the thermostat to warm the house. The teen took her brothers outside for a while so they could play in the flesh air, but when Andrew became dirty she had to bring the boys inside.
As she entered the house, Nicole noticed smoke pouring from the heating vents throughout the home. Firefighter Tracy Antrikin told The Voice (Macomb County, Michigan): "She noticed smoke in the rear of the home, told her brothers to get out and made sure no one re-entered the home."
