Any teacher searching for refreshing contemporary repertoire will be pleased by this new volume of modern-sounding art music for the intermediate piano student. This interesting collection of lesser-known pieces by European composers of the 20th and 21st centuries has been thoughtfully edited by Peter Roggenkamp, professor of piano in Lubeck.
These pieces, while not necessarily "easy" for the average young student, are similar in scope to volumes 2, 3 4 of Bela Bartok's Mikrokosmos. The works are arranged in chronological order according to the birth dates of the composers, beginning with Bartok (1881-1945), and ending with Austrian composer Johannes Maria Straud (b. 1974). Other composers represented include Anton Webern, Jeno Takacs, Gyorgy Kurtag and Arvo Part.
