Each year MTNA presents the MTNA Benjamin Whitten Collegiate Chapter and Collegiate Chapter Advisor of the Year Award to an outstanding collegiate chapter, its members and its advisor for demonstrating exceptional organization and depth of activities. The winning chapter receives $1,000 and its advisor receives a $500 prize. Both will be recognized at the 2008 MTNA National Conference in Denver, Colorado, March 29-April 2.
Jane Magrath, NCTM, faculty co-advisor with Barbara Fast, for the University of Oklahoma Student MTNA Chapter, which won the award in 2007, says the award has meant more to the chapter than just a cash prize:
"The Collegiate Chapter of the Year Award received in spring 2007 has fully empowered the University of Oklahoma Student MTNA Chapter with regard to their self-esteem as professionals and their view of the worthiness of their numerous outreach projects. The pride in receiving the award has been felt by each member of the chapter, and they believe, quite rightfully so, that what they are doing is making a difference--an aspiration of all of us. As a chapter, they are fully energized and will continue to move forward in service to students and teachers in our profession with renewed commitment. They are our future, and they have the power and energy to strengthen enrich our profession and lives as music teachers."
Being part of an award-winning chapter has provided encouragement and an opportunity to share, according to Janci Bronson. Bronson was president of the University of Oklahoma Collegiate Chapter when it was named 2007 Benjamin Whitten Collegiate Chapter of the Year:
"The University of Oklahoma MTNA Collegiate Chapter felt extremely honored to be awarded the 2007 Collegiate Chapter of the Year.
