I have a love-hate relationship with time. In spite of my necessary dependence on clocks, I make no real strides in managing my time, continuing to live my hours on the backside of the beat, late for everything. A few weeks ago I bought a new bedside clock. It runs not on electricity or batteries, but must be wound every night. I embraced the idea of this old-fashioned ritual in my most recent rebellion against technology. But I have discovered that the new clock loses several minutes in every twenty-four hour period, reflecting, I'm afraid, its owner's skewed sense of time.
