A truly dramatic metamorphosis can be a long haul, and Kathleen Maignan, Chopin Rabin, and Barbara Drayer are committed. But they can still indulge in immediate gratification -- as long as it isn't the edible kind. In this case, we sent all three to the Garren New York salon for a new look and a dose of encouragement. "When a woman is going through a long-term makeover, a new haircut or color can be inspiring," Garren says. "In a moment, they see that they're not stuck in a holding pattern until they reach their goal. They can be pretty and sexy along the way."
Kathleen Maignan,
data manager Hair history: "My hair is really thick and hard to manage -- so I just didn't. It was always in a bun or a ponytail. At one point, I cut my
hair short enough so that I couldn't pull it back. I seriously didn't want
to leave the house until it grew in. I also had a great hairdresser who relaxed my hair about once every two months -- right afterward, I'd look perfect. Erik Braun used a sheer gold demipermanent glaze that helped bring in some subtle light, and Manabu Unno cut layers into her bob to help elongate her face and keep her full hair from looking too round. The ends of her hair were damaged, so they needed to be cut off." Maignan's reaction: "It looked great. My coworkers were so happy to see my hair down, one of them actually said, 'Hooray!' But the styling took a lot of work -- Manabu blow-dried, then rolled, then flatironed, then curling-ironed. I work out a lot, but I can only wash my hair about once
