EVERYBODY KNOWS--because they were taught it at school--that the language of this article originated with Anglo-Saxon conquerors of England between about 450 AD, when the Romans left, and about 600, when the Pope introduced Christian missionaries. And if they look in encyclopaedias or some fairly standard text books or have watched recent television programs on the language, they will find those school lessons confirmed.
But everybody might be wrong. The twenty-first-century onslaught of science on British pre-history has pulled the rug away from the Anglo-Saxon story. Now it is indicating that the English language in England itself might have been spoken ...
