In the Buff
This summer, sex appeal doesn't come
in a tube of red
lipstick. Here, warmer, spicier neutrals.
By Jessica B. Matlin
Caramel blush. Beige gloss. Ivory shadow. Worn separately, these colors are tasteful and flattering -- the cosmetics equivalent of a perfectly simple Prada cardigan. But when arranged in an artful pattern, earthy neutrals quickly metamorphose into something sultry and seductive (think a leopard-spotted corset dress). Unlike those animal prints, though, tawny makeup is both sexy enough for night and casual enough for day. "These shades make your skin look healthy and give your features depth and definition," says makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi. And unlike ubiquitous bronzer, they aren't a means to simply faking a tan. Rather, they enhance and add warmth to any complexion, whether it's alabaster or ebony. "The colors are so nuanced, and the effect is more subtle. People are going to wonder what exactly it is that's making you look so gorgeous," says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis. And effortless beauty is the best kind of sexy.
